Today is January 31 and it’s the last day for your employer to prepare and mail out your W-2. I know that many of you dread tax season, but frankly, I love it. The government forces me to review how much money I’ve made over the past year, how much I paid out in taxes and even better, how much, if anything, they owe me. This year will be my most complicated tax return year. I am claiming income from my job, this blog, my business, and the investment property. Yikes! This won’t be fun and I’m not looking forward to it, but H&R Block has just stepped in to make my life and yours a little easier.
I have done my own taxes every year since I was 15. No one else has ever done my taxes for me, and I’m extremely confident that my ability to do and understand my financial situation surpasses that of any CPA. In fact, I’ve found errors on the W-2’s issued by my job every year for the past 3 years. They have a great program to walk you through the entire process of filing your taxes. The best part is that this program automatically has 2011 tax changes loaded into it and will check to see if you qualify for 2011 tax deducations or credits. If you do your taxes online with them for multiple years, the program generates a report comparing your taxes from the current year to the prior year. And when my PC crashed, taking my tax information with it, I was able to download my tax filings directly from their site.
