The Government Gives Free Appliances? Yup!

If the title of this post caught your attention then I know that you’re either a skeptic looking for the other shoe to drop or a cheapskate like me looking for a freebie. Yes, you can get brand spanking new appliances for free from the Federal government, but with everything, there are rules.

First, a little background. My mom as well as my tenant are both permanently disabled. My mom is disabled physically and my tenant because of her terminal illness. Both live in two different states and both were able to qualify for programs that replaced their refrigerators, paid a small amount towards their energy bills, installed or insulated water heaters as well as weatherproofed their abodes for free. I should also say that my boyfriend’s mom who is 80 also qualified for some of these services (her appliances weren’t old enough, but she got the other stuff). How did they do it?

It’s pretty simple really. All of these women have one thing in common. They are all disadvantaged and have low incomes. My mom because she is disabled, my tenant because she is terminally ill, and my boyfriend’s mom because she is elderly basically lives on just social security. Because of this they all qualified for free appliance from the Federal government under the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

According to their brochure, “The mission of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is to assist low income households, particularly those with the lowest incomes that pay a high proportion of household income for home energy, primarily in meeting their immediate home energy needs.” Qualifying for the program is relatively simple. You must not earn more than 150% of the poverty level or 60% of your state’s median income level.

This is a great program, and with winter right around the corner, why not see if you or someone you love qualifies? You have a few options for obtaining more information. You can

  1. Visit the website
  2. Call them 1-866-674-6327 7am-5pm (Mountain)
  3. Or find your state’s local office

To be fair, each state receives limited funds each year, and competition is fierce. You may end up on a waiting list, but, if your living conditions; or home energy costs relative to your income is high; or if you have elderly family members or children under 6, you may qualify faster. Good luck.

I have listed the states and their contact information to obtain more information below, but you can also visit Free Government Appliance for Low Income for more up-to-date information on the LI HEAP program.

UPDATE: Hi!  This article is here for archive purposes.  Please visit the site above for correct information.  If you were a victim of Hurricane Sandy, please contact FEMA for assistance.

22 thoughts on “The Government Gives Free Appliances? Yup!

  • my family and i need a few appliances first a stove abd refrigerator and also a dryer both me and my mom draw disability. we live on a fixed income my son is a senior in high school this year and my mom had a stroke in oct 2010. please help and please respond

    • I will send you an e-mail directly. I just need to know what state you are in to send you all the information that you will need to apply.

  • We are in desperate need of a fridge and washer & dryer.. We are on fixed income and cant afford to buy them.. Someone please help…

      • Thats a very cruel comment. There are people who do not even have $50 to spare, not even $10. And the “free” libray is miles away, no car, no busfare. I know someone that lost their job, applied for 140 jobs, went through their savings, unemployment and finally got a partime job and collects scrap to desperately keep their house. This person earns $1100 a month with a 885 a month morgage and has never fallen behind. They have gone without food and had the electric turned off but hung onto their home they have had for 18 years. And you cant let your taxes give them a helping hand when they refuse to give up and paid taxes for all thier life?

  • Waste of taxpayer money. They can go to a free library and find used appliances for $50 on craigslist. Sorry, but I, as a taxpayer, have no desire to buy your mom a brand new fridge. A used one for $50, maybe, but not a new one.

    • I absolutely respect your view. The program pays for what they deem to be critical. Usually it’s telephone service or for a month of home electricity costs, but I think that there are different ways that states can allocate the money.

    • wow what a comment to say to these people that are disabled and need all of our help. I am a taxpayer and the government seems to be putting our money into their own pockets. 2. If you were paying attention to the news there are people getting killed on craigslist. 3. And last of all I apologize for his ignorance. Sometimes people like this need a blessing and prayer. One of these days you and your family might find yourself in this position. Hopefully not, your heart is cold and karma is not to far behind. Watch the evil that comes out your mouth. Because GOD is not to far behind. Catching your words. I am very blessed but I was once like this man. Until I got a taste of my own medicine. Now my blessings have been tripled and my family has grown to help out other people in need. I send a blessing to each and everyone of you’s. And to Kevin I pray that God forgives you for your shallow heart and that you don’t lose what you have because of the hate that comes out of your mouth.

  • Does Michigan give low income home buyers assistance in purchasing new appliances? My mom just bought a house (in closing) and it has no appliances except a dishwasher and she is using the NSP program and the MSHDA down payment assistance programs.

    • It’s hard to get a new appliance when purchasing a home. I don’t think that your mom will qualify, but call up the department in Michigan that handles the free program!
