Welcome back! Have you checked out the free webinar on how to establish credit for your small business?

Since last year, I’ve changed the focus of this site from speaking about my experiences with debt to helping others craft their own debt reduction plans by utilizing and sharing years’ worth of the same strategies that helped me.

What was once just a personal blog for me has evolved into classes, live Periscope broadcasts, YouTube videos, tweets and speeches all about personal finance.  Sharing my own story and helping you improve your own financial lives has truly been exhilarating for me.

That’s why I’m so excited to announce that the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and Chevrolet have teamed up to host a series of free workshops designed to educate African American consumers on financial literacy and assist workshop participants in developing concrete steps toward financial security.

These series of workshops called the Rainbow PUSH Money Matters sponsored by Chevrolet, will be held across the United States for the balance of the year.  You know that the last part of the year is typically when financial prudence goes completely outside the window as holiday spending rolls in.  That’s why I so infamously gave up on buying Christmas gifts completely a number of years ago.

The interactive curriculum for the Money Matters series, is taught by some of the nation’s leading public and private sector financial experts, including my friend, Dominique who is a part of my Colorful Money group.  What I like about this series is that the material is geared towards helping a wide cross-section of participants at various levels of financial literacy – sort of like how the material on this site doesn’t go completely over your head. Participants can expect to walk away from the sessions with tools and resources to develop best practices that will help support stronger financial health and who doesn’t love that?

The next session will be held in my home town of New York City on September 10 at the Harlem Commonwealth Council.  The New York event is scheduled to cover the following:

  • Budgeting Basics – i.e. how to create and manage a personal budget, pay off debt, and help protect yourself from fraud.
    • Dominique Broadway – Personal Finance Expert and Money Therapist
  • Understanding Credit – i.e. understanding how to apply for credit, the meaning of credit scores, cleaning up credit history, and understanding debt.
    • Bill Cheeks – President, ABBA Associates Inc.
  • College Financing – i.e. overview of financial options to consider when planning for college, including Financial Aid Programs.
    • Jessica Brown – Financial Aid Counselor, Howard University
  • Investing 101 – i.e. how to find multiple sources of income, stocks vs. other investments, creating a simple portfolio.
    • Gail Perry-Mason – Senior Director of Investments, Oppenheimer & Co.
  • Entrepreneurship – i.e. how to establish your personal brand and get your idea off the ground.
    • Valeisha Butterfield-Jones – CEO, Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network (WEEN); Head of Black Community Engagement, Google

If you’re not able to attend this event, the next workshop takes place in Detroit with additional cities to follow.  To register for the Money Matters workshop in your area, visit http://bit.ly/RainbowpushNY

  • Harlem, NY – September 10 at the Harlem Commonwealth Council (361 West 125th, New York, NY 10027)
  • Detroit, MI – October 1 at Wayne County Community College (Frank Hayden Room, 801 W. Fort Street, Detroit, MI 48226)
  • Atlanta, GA – October 22 at Morehouse College
  • Washington D.C. – November 12 at Howard University
  • Oakland, CA – December 3 at Abyssinian Baptist Church

Do not miss the opportunity to join this free workshop and tell a friend as well.  Each workshop will be fun and informative.  I hope to see you there.
